Mihaj Eminesku i spas od terora istorije
Mihai Eminescu and escape from the terror of history
Apstrakt
"The terror of history" (expression circulated by the worldwide known Romanian philosopher Mircea Eliade) is a feeling experienced by each individual who finds himself caught up in the atrocities of life and historical events that he cannot oppose or get rid of by finding a metahistorical explanation or view of life. Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889), the Romanian national poet and prose writer had already been a contemporary to the neo-positivistic, deterministic and materialistic logic, which has later (in the 20th century) established itself as the mainstream Weltanschauung of modern/western civilization. To the "terror of history" Eminescu opposes a broader outlook of the world: having in view that man is in a constant and natural relation with the macrocosm and with the miracle and mystery of overall life itself, the true measure of existence should be sought after in that fundamental relation, no matter in which historical period an individual lives. Moreover, the Weltanschauung of each... civilization is subject to constant change, being thus only relatively true. In this light, today's Cartesian outlook "I think, therefore I am" appears as a mere statement if existence itself is considered, and one might rather say: "I am therefore I think, but I also feel, dream, have troubles, who am I, why must I die?" etc. Becoming in time, relativity of time, space and cause appear to condition both individual fate and the outlook of history to such an extent that the very questions and answers given to existential issues represent the key to the metahistorical meaning an individual finds no matter when and where he lives. A writer and a thinker at the same time, inspired by the German idealistic philosophy the roots of which were found in the Romanian folklore, and even deeper in the Hinduistic philosophy (as Eminescu had a solid knowledge of Sanskrit), Eminescu's unique poetic expression is equally an act of "knowing" and "knowledge" of the mythical nature of all things. This procedure, similar to initiation in all traditional cultures, encompasses a grasp of life in which both the empirical and the lyrical (poetic) ego are equally involved in the indestructible harmony and unity of the Esthetic, Ethic and True nature of things altogether. Exercising an important influence upon the 20th century Romanian art, literature and philosophy (i.e. Constantin Brancusi, Lucian Blaga, Mircea Eliade, Constantin Noica, Nichita Stanescu, etc.) Eminescu's solution to the "terror of history" is equally similar to the contemporary research and artistic expression related to archetypes. Still, with Eminescu, erudition never becomes the focus of his works, as it is constantly and subtly melted with his unforgettable poetic incantation and expression, which redefine and reconsider life and history from within the artistic uttering. Eminescu belongs to that category of artists the work of whom can always be reconsidered and, moreover, it obliges us to review our own Weltanschauung.
