Recepcija romana Ajris Merdok na srpskohrvatskom jezičkom području
Reception of Iris Murdoch's novels by Serbs and Croats
Abstract
The topic of this paper is the reception of Iris Murdoch's novels in the former Yugoslavia, including both their translations and the critical reviews of her opus in Serbo-Croat literary journals and other publications. Out of numerous novels written by this prolific author, as many as six were translated and published in the analyzed territory before it fell apart in 1992, but no fragments from her works appeared in the Serbo-Croat publications during that period, apart from a single essay. The results of the research presented in this paper show that the critical responses to Iris Murdoch's opus were also plentiful and rather appreciative. Thus, it can be concluded that on the whole the British writer was held in great esteem both by Yugoslav publishers - who made her novels available to our readership, and by the reviewers in Serbo-Croat literary periodicals, as our critics paid due attention to her works. This mainly coincides with the opinion of British critics, reflected in the f...act that Iris Murdoch was awarded the Booker Prize in 1978.
