Linearno i ciklično vreme u smrti kralja Aartura ser Tomasa Malorija
Linear and cyclical patterns of time in Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur
Apstrakt
Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur is the longest all-embracing version of the Arthurian legend in English medieval literature. It was written in the second half of the fifteenth century and it comprises eight Tales, which describe Arthur's life, from his mysterious conception and birth to his tragic end in the last battle with Mordred. Malory scholars claim that the first and last Tales resemble historical chronicles, whereas his middle Tales belong to the genre of romance. In this paper I will illustrate their claim with examples from the text and show how the change of genre implies the shift of time pattern. Namely, in his historical chronicles, Malory uses linear time to narrate a sequence of joyous and tragic events while in his romances, his principal character, Arthur, is fixed in the cyclical time of courtly romance, performing strictly ceremonial roles. .
