On translating some applied arts terms from Serbian into English: an explicative analysis
Апстракт
This paper discusses a reproduction synthesis of a Serbian-to-English translation of professional and vocational terminology in the applied arts field. The analysed lexical corpus consists of 309 titles of academic courses, given bilingually in Serbian and English, which form the study programmes at undergraduate, master and doctoral levels at a state academic institution in Belgrade. In the research the authors have: identified errors and inaccuracies in the said course titles by means of explicative analysis; offered typology and classification schemes for translation methods; provided more appropriate translations in place of inaccurate ones, pointed out their justification and sustainability and thus opened the door to the standardisation of specialised Serbian-English vocabulary in the fields of applied arts proper, design, conservation and restoration. The authors have applied qualitative research methods of an analytic-synthetic type, as well as contact linguistic and contrastiv...e analyses. On the whole, additional light has been shed on the subtle translation issues of formal correspondence and functional-communicational equivalence of purpose-specific language. Since the presented research encompasses a wide array of translating practices of not only microlinguistic, but also macrolinguistic nature, the authors deem their work to have an added relevance for translatology and studies of language for specific purposes.
