The issue of identity is one of the main themes of the postcolonial literature. In postcolonial fiction identity shaping is usually seen as a result of negotiation between cultures, where psychological growth of an individual is inseparable from the broader social and (multi)cultural context. Margaret Atwood's novel Alias Grace and V. S. Naipaul's novel The Enigma of Arrival feature life histories of exiles. They are trying to cope with alien cultures, which they experience as foreign thoughts, standards opinions and judgments. Narrative devices such as authentic documents historical evidence and canonic literary texts contribute to the image of the web in which protagonists are caught. The patchwork of intertexts in Atwood's novel corresponds to Naipaul's metaphoric use of tormenting dreams - the agony of an individual caught in a web of history and culture and its attempt to overcome its own marginality through individuation.
Protagonisti romana Margaret Etvud Alijas Grejsi V.S. Najpola Enigmadolaskasu iseljenici. U romanima Etvudovei Najpola narativne tehnike slikanja autentičnog društva, mahom kroz uključivanje istorijske i pseudo-istorijske građe, doprinose utisku 'mreže' u koje društvo hvata pojedinca. Naracija u oba romana predstavlja svedočenje o borbi za stic...anje sopstvenog identiteta.
