dc.description.abstract | This paper examines four new historicist interpretations of the supernatural in Macbeth - the witches and their prophecies - by the most influential representatives of this critical practice: Stephen Mullaney, Peter Stallybrass, Leonard Tennenhouse and Stephen Greenblatt. Unlike traditional criticism which attempts to discover coherence within a literary work and to offer a single, unique interpretation, new historicism interprets literary works from the various perspectives of their historical and political contexts. Understanding culture as a text, reading literary texts along with the non-literary, and canonized texts along with the marginalized, new historicists offer a more comprehensive knowledge of the Renaissance. By analyzing the concrete phenomenon of the supernatural, new historicists abandon the extreme attitudes of traditional criticism, which either attempted to discover historical trivia of Mediaeval and Renaissance witchcraft, or insisted on the psychological symbolism of the witches. Instead, witches and witchcraft become the rethoric of treason, a way to conceptualize the social system, a device of subversion and its containment, and a manifestation of the deepest personal fears and anxieties of King James I. | en |
