One of the biggest problems that the main character of the novel Naive. Super. encounters is his impossibility to grasp the modern concept of time. Large chunks of the text deal with his attempts to surmount this problem. Due to the fact that the modern concept of time is inextricably intertwined with the modernity itself, it seems that this thematic thread offers a key to reading, understanding and interpretation of the text. This paper departs from the point of view that the categories of space and place are a more appropriate starting point for the interpretation of this text, because basic thematic complexes of the text - identity crisis and strategy for surmounting the crisis - are more clearly manifested within them. The category of time on the one hand, and the categories of space and place on the other, form an antagonism which ultimately can be applied to the interpretation of the two opposite concepts of human being in the world. The concept of the categories of space and time exposed in this paper is based on the insights of human geography, primarely those of Yi-Fu Tuan and E. C. Relph. Included in the analysis are some theoretical concepts of H. U. Gumbrecht.en
