AB - Gender issues are evidently among the most pressing problems in all contemporary societies, but the gap between women and men is undoubtedly rather wide in two countries which apparently do not have much in common otherwise-India and Japan. A parallel between their cultures can be found in the works of two twentieth century authors whose lives were a strange mixture of Occidental and Oriental ingredients: the recently deceased Ruth Prawer Jhabvala-a European who, having married an Indian, spent more than two decades in India-and Natsume So-seki-a Japanese whose brief two-year visit to London greatly influenced both his subsequent life and writing.

AB - This paper analyses the entire reception of works written by John Fowles in the Serbo-Croatian speaking area, from the first mentioning of his oeuvre in our press until the disintegration of the territory of former Yugoslavia. The translations of his opus are also noted in the paper, both those published during the selected period and those that appeared later than 1992. The critical reception of John Fowles, together with the interest of our publishers and reading public in the translation of his works, can be judged as satisfactory both regarding the quality of the critical texts and the duration of his reception, which also continued into the twenty-first century.

AB - This paper analyses the overall reception of works written by Malcolm Lowry in the Serbo-Croatian speaking area, starting with the first translation of his masterpiece - the novel Under the Volcano - in 1966, and ending with the second edition of the same translation of this novel in 2005. The critical reception of Lowry's opus duly followed the translations, and although it is rather scarce, the quantity of the response can be judged as adequate if we take into consideration the fact that this English writer is deemed to be a ’one book author'. Both the quality of the critical texts and the duration of Lowry's reception in the former Yugoslavia can also be estimated as quite satisfactory, especially due to the fact that it continued into the twenty-first century, as well.

AB - The critical reception of the novels written by Donald Michael Thomas in the former Yugoslavia started immediately after the publication of his famous masterpiece - The White Hotel, to be additionally boosted by the translation of this novel after only a few years. Although both the quantity and the quality of the response to that book can be estimated as satisfactory, just one more novel by the same writer was translated before the disintegration of the Serbo-Croatian speaking area -0 in 1992, while not even one extract from his fiction was found in literary magazines, periodicals and dailies, published throughout the region during that period. Another interesting fact is that all the critical texts regarding Thomas are reviews of the White Hotel, apart from the preface to its translation, whose author deals with the entire opus of the British novelist. Since the second of his novels was translated at the very end of the analyzed period, the ensuing reactions are not considered in this paper, and even though the critical reception continued for some time after that, it soon abated and stopped altogether towards the end of the nineties.

AB - The main aim of this paper is to present the reception of works written by the Indian English writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and to assess translation quality by analyzing her nine stories offered to the Serbian readership, since none of her numerous novels has been translated in our country. Besides being favourably received by our critics, Jhabvala is also one of the rare authors writing about India whose works have been translated into Serbian - apart from Salman Rushdie. Detailed analysis of two short stories, rendered by different translators, has shown some grave errors, especially when the translators had to deal with culture-specific items or culture-bound words. On the basis of the data obtained in that way, and using methods existing in the Translation Studies theory, it has been concluded that the best suited strategy in such cases would be the use of the so-called doublets, namely translation by means of a loan word plus additional explanation either within the text itself or in the form of footnotes and glosses.

Jhabvale, a zatim izložena analiza nekih problema sa kojima su se često susretali njihovi prevodioci, uglavnom u vezi sa prevođenjem termina iz izvornog teksta koji su bogati značenjem vezanim za jednu nama daleku kulturu., The main aim of this paper is to present the reception of works written by the Indian English writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and to assess translation quality by analyzing her nine stories offered to the Serbian readership, since none of her numerous novels has been translated in our country. On the basis of the data obtained in that way, and using methods existing in the Translation Studies theory, it has been concluded that the best suited strategy in such cases would be the use of the so-called doublets, namely translation by means of a loan word plus additional explanation either within the text itself or in the form of footnotes and glosses.",

AB - The critical reception of the novels written by Donald Michael Thomas in the former Yugoslavia started immediately a. er the publication of his famous masterpiece - The White Hotel, to be additionally boosted by the translation of this novel a. er only a few years. Since the second of his novels was translated at the very end of the analysed period, the ensuing reactions are not considered in this paper, and even though the critical reception continued for some time a. er that, it soon abated and stopped altogether towards the end of the nineties.

AB - Although highly appreciated by both readers and critics in her country and abroad, Doris Lessing was not sufficiently received in the Serbo-Croat territory before winning the 2007 Nobel prize. The few critical responses and translations prior to that were published in Croatia, with the exception of an article written by Biljana Dojčinović for the Belgrade literary magazine Književna kritika. The first Serbian translation - Fifth Child - did not appear until 2004, and it is only after she received the Nobel prize that the reception of this acclaimed British writer can be estimated as fully adequate, in the manner and to the extent which her works rightly deserve. .

AB - The author presents the critical reception of the oeuvre of Anthony Burgess in Serbo-Croat literary magazines, periodicals and dailies, until the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in 1992. According to the research not many of his works were translated into our language within that period and besides, almost all of the translations published in literary journals were essays. Contrary to that, the number of critical commentaries was much higher, and they mostly concerned two of his best-known books - A Clockwork Orange and 1985. Since they were both translated into Serbian, with the delay of only one decade, we can assert that our readership was fairly acquainted with the opus of this writer. On the other hand, although the response of our reviewers to his works cannot be estimated as satisfactory in terms of volume, the quality of the critical reception was at a very high level. The authors of articles and reviews published in academic journals included some renowned Yugoslav literary experts and writers, such as Gordana B. Todorović and Borislav Pekić, while the content of these texts was rather appreciative. It can therefore be concluded that the overall reception of works written by Anthony Burgess corresponds to his merits, as they received due attention by our critics during the analyzed period.

The aim of the research is to indicate why Serbian literary translators encounter certain problems, as well as to prove that much more attention should be paid by our publishers to this matter, in order to improve the final product of translation before it is presented to the readers.

AB - The topic of this paper is the reception of Iris Murdoch's novels in the former Yugoslavia, including both their translations and the critical reviews of her opus in Serbo-Croat literary journals and other publications. Out of numerous novels written by this prolific author, as many as six were translated and published in the analyzed territory before it fell apart in 1992, but no fragments from her works appeared in the Serbo-Croat publications during that period, apart from a single essay. The results of the research presented in this paper show that the critical responses to Iris Murdoch's opus were also plentiful and rather appreciative. Thus, it can be concluded that on the whole the British writer was held in great esteem both by Yugoslav publishers - who made her novels available to our readership, and by the reviewers in Serbo-Croat literary periodicals, as our critics paid due attention to her works. This mainly coincides with the opinion of British critics, reflected in the fact that Iris Murdoch was awarded the Booker Prize in 1978.

The research has revealed numerous mistakes which are classified and clarified in order to show that (and why) the translator has, on the whole, done a poor job. Therefore, it can be concluded that the translation does not do the British writer justice at all, because it is more than unsatisfactory, at times even incomprehensible. Unfortunately, the Serbian rendering also undermines the reputation of our professional literary translators, showing them in a very dim light.

AB - In the second part of the paper, the author presents the critical reception of William Golding's novels in Serbo-Croat literary magazines, periodicals and dailies after he received the Nobel prize in 1983. According to the research conducted, the critical response to Golding's opus - which was rather satisfactory, not only in volume but also in quality, even before he was awarded this prestigious prize - gained further momentum after that, and it can rightly be estimated as fully adequate within the analyzed period until the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in 1992. Whereas before 1983 attention was paid mostly to Golding's first novel, in the later period the articles published in the Serbo-Croat territory were also devoted to other novels by this British writer. Therefore, we can conclude that William Golding was treated by renowned Yugoslav literary critics according to his merits, in the manner and to the extent which his works deserved, both before and after receiving the Nobel prize.

AB - In this paper, the author presents the reception of Angus Wilson's opus in the Serbo-Croat territory - first by mentioning the translations of his works and their excerpts into our language, and then by analyzing the critical commentaries published in literary journals and periodicals. The research has shown that, although both major novels written by Wilson, Anglo-Saxon Attitudes and The Old Men at the Zoo, were translated soon after being published in English, not many fragments from his works appeared in the Serbo-Croat publications. On the contrary, the critical responses to Wilson's novels in the former Yugoslavia were numerous and mostly favorable, while several complete accounts of his life and work were also published during the researched period, so we can conclude that our critics paid due attention to his opus. Unfortunately, the fame of the British writer in our country was of short duration, as it lasted only during the sixties, and after two essays published in early eighties, Angus Wilson sank into oblivion and has remained completely forgotten by our reviewers even after the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in 1992.

AB - The first part of this paper deals with the translations of William Golding's works and their excerpts published in Serbo-Croat literary journals and periodicals, as well as with the critical reception of Golding's novels before he received the Nobel prize in 1983. The research has shown that, unlike the critical response, translation of this writer's opus did not do him justice, because only two of his nine published novels and one excerpt were translated into our language before he was awarded the highest prize for literature. The same holds after 1983, as only two more novels, several excerpts and two essays appeared in our literary magazines until the end of the analyzed period in 1992, when the former Yugoslavia fell apart. Thus, it can be concluded that the translations of William Golding's novels were not available to the Yugoslav readership to the extent to which their significance would have deserved it, regardless even of the fact that he was awarded the Booker prize in 1980 and became the Nobel prize-winner three years later. Fortunately, our critics paid due attention to Golding's opus, especially to his first novel which was the object of many, though somewhat late, articles in Serbo-Croat literary periodicals. Before the British writer was completely forgotten by our reviewers in the seventies, several complete accounts of his life and work were also published during this initial period.

Književna kritika u bivšoj Jugoslaviji o stvaralaštvu Ivlina Voa

AB - This paper begins with a brief general outline of Evelyn Waugh's life and work, and proceeds to a survey of the critical reception of Waugh's novels in Serbo-Croat journals, periodicals and literary studies, which are presented chronologically, from the first mention of his work until the end of the period under consideration, in 1992, when former Yugoslavia fell apart. Research shows that, although this writer has been regarded by many British critics as the leading satirical novelist of his day, during his lifetime, translations of his novels were not available to a Yugoslav readership to the extent to which his international fame would deserve. This especially holds in the case of Waugh's early novels, which reflect the modernist crisis by depicting the rootlessness, alienation and disorientation of British youth in the aftermath of World War I, and even more in the case of his war trilogy, assessed by critics in his own country as the best English novel about World War II. However, besides a few short informative critical commentaries, several comparatively complete accounts of Waugh's life and work have been published, two of them written by Vida Marković and one by Svetozar M. Ignjačević.

AB - This paper deals with the reception of works written by Charles Percy Snow, a well-known twentieth century British novelist, critic and physicist. Snow is particularly noted for his lectures and books regarding the concept of "The Two Cultures", also reflected in his novels analysing the relationship between science and the community and depicting intellectuals in academic and government settings in the modern era. Although he represents one of the most perceptive and interesting figures of the post-war literature in English and his work has become an object of many famous studies and provoked widespread and heated debates, the research presented in this paper shows that the critical responses to his novels in the former Yugoslavia were few and unsatisfactory, especially when compared with the opinion of British critics.

The analyzed critical commentaries deal mainly with Tolkien's most famous work - his trilogy The Lord of the Rings, while the rest of his fiction has received less attention in rather informative articles. Nevertheless, although Tolkien's fame in the examined period (ending in 1992, with the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia) was still not at the heights which it has reached lately - owing to the extremely popular films based on the first two parts of his trilogy - it can be concluded that the critical reception of his works was satisfactory. In spite of the fact that his two main novels were translated with an unforgivable delay, Tolkien was recognized by our critics as an important writer and his literary merit was fully acknowledged.
